Breckinridge County is the 6th largest county in the state of Kentucky with 572 sq. miles of beautiful scenery, communities and activities. The area boasts the Ohio River on the north, Rough River Lake, and the Yellowbank Wildlife Management Area. It is a Mississipian plateau with a large karst region that includes Mammoth Cave.
There are picnics, festivals and a county fair in several communities during the year, most notably the Sacajawea festival. During this festival, the citizens of Cloverport honor the Native American woman, Sacajawea, the first week of August each year. The festival concludes each year with a display of fireworks over the Ohio River.
The county was formed in 1800 and is located in the Pennyrile region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 383 feet to 920 feet above sea level. In 2003, the average population was 19,011.
The county seat of Breckinridge County is Hardinsburg. Hardinsburg had a 2002 population of 2381 persons. Cloverport, located 12 miles northwest of Hardinsburg, had a 2002 population of 1254. Irvington is 18 miles northeast of Hardinsburg.
