Hardin County is located just South of Louisville KY and contains a portion of the Fort Knox Military Installation. Elizabethtown, the county seat of Hardin County, was the location that inspired and was featured in the movie, also named Elizabethtown.

Tourist attractions in the area include the Greenbelt Walking Trails and Freeman Lake. The Kentucky Heartland Festival is held at Freeman Lake Park in Elizabethtown each year during the last Friday and Saturday in August. The area also boasts the Glendale Crossing Festival and Golden Armor Festival.

Hardin County was formed in 1793. It is located in the Pennyrile region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 383 to 1017 feet above sea level. In 2003, the county population was 96,052 in a land area of 628 square miles.

Elizabethtown is located in north central Kentucky at the intersection of several major highway systems. The city is situated 45 miles south of Louisville, Kentucky; 84 miles southwest of Lexington, Kentucky; 128 miles northeast of Nashville, Tennessee; and 144 miles southwest of Cincinnati, Ohio. Elizabethtown had an estimated 2002 population of 23,080 persons.
